How to Replace a Dozuki Japanese Saw Blade (6” / 150mm)

How to Replace a Dozuki Japanese Saw Blade (6” / 150mm)

Replacing your Japanese saw blade is incredibly easy.
Because a Dozuki (Back Saw) is designed for sub-millimeter precision—like cutting fine dovetails or tenons—keeping the blade razor-sharp is absolutely essential.

Is it time to replace your blade?

If you notice that your cuts are becoming fuzzy, or if the saw starts wandering off your perfectly drawn line, it’s usually not your technique—it’s simply a dull blade. When you feel the sharpness has dropped or notice chipped teeth, we highly recommend swapping in a new replacement blade.

Because the Dozuki features a rigid steel spine (back) to prevent the blade from flexing, the replacement method is slightly different from a Ryoba saw. However, the process remains very simple.

In this guide, we will show you how to replace the blade on a SUIZAN Dozuki 6-inch (150mm), complete with a quick video tutorial.

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Remove the screw.

First, use a Phillips-head screwdriver to remove the single screw securing the blade to the handle.

2. Remove the blade from the spine.

Lightly tap the heel (base) of the blade with a hammer to slide it out from the steel spine.
Note: It is also perfectly fine to remove both the blade and the spine together from the handle first, then separate them.

3. Attach the new replacement blade.

Slide the new blade into the steel spine. If it doesn't slide in easily or feels too tight, you can lightly tap the end of the blade with a hammer to seat it properly.

💡 Pro Tip for Safe Tapping: > Never hit the cutting teeth directly with a hammer! To avoid damaging your brand-new blade, place a small piece of scrap wood (a wooden block) against the back edge or the base of the blade, and tap the wood instead. This safely and gently forces the blade into the spine.

4. Secure with the screw.

Once the blade is fully seated in the spine, insert them back into the handle. Tighten the screw securely. Check that there is no wobble, and you are ready to cut!

Important Safety Notes & Tips

Match the Blade to the Saw: Every saw requires its specific replacement blade. For the Dozuki 6-inch handle, you must strictly use the Dozuki 6-inch (150mm) replacement blade.

Handle with Care: The new teeth are extremely sharp. Please be very careful not to cut your hands or fingers during the replacement process.
